OVERBAND SEPARATORS

How it works

An overband magnet is installed above a conveyor to lift and remove ferrous metals from the material flow. A high‑intensity magnetic field attracts steel and iron, while a self‑cleaning belt carries the captured metal away from the product stream. This ensures continuous, non‑contact separation without slowing production.

OVERBAND SEPARATORS

Magnet Systems

We offer a wide range of permanent and electromagnet systems, talk to us to discuss which is best for your application.

Permanent Deep Field Ferrite

Robust, reliable and cost‑effective. Ideal for general recycling applications requiring strong magnetic penetration and consistent ferrous recovery.

Permanent Rare Earth

Compact, lightweight and extremely powerful. Perfect for mobile plant, tight spaces or applications needing maximum magnetic intensity.

Electromagnet

Adjustable deep magnetic field for high working gaps (400 mm+). Suitable when on/off control is required or when separating larger ferrous items.

OVERBAND SEPARATORS

Electromagnet Overband

Magnapower Electromagnet Overbands deliver high-performance ferrous separation in tough environments. Featuring a deep, adjustable magnetic field and durable construction, they are ideal for high working gaps or when the magnet needs to be switched off. A motor-driven belt removes captured metals from the magnetic zone, and the system includes a transformer rectifier for DC power. It can be configured for crossbelt or in-line installation.

OVERBAND SEPARATORS

Permanent Overband Magnet

Positioned above a conveyor, the Overband Magnet uses a high-intensity magnetic field to extract ferrous metals from the material flow below. A moving belt carries the captured metals away, allowing the cleaned material to continue uninterrupted. This non-contact separation ensures efficient removal of steel and iron without disrupting throughput.

OVERBAND SEPARATORS

CrossBelt Overband Magnets

Installed across the main conveyor, providing easy integration and convenient side discharge. Ideal for flexible layouts and retrofit installations.

OVERBAND SEPARATORS

In-Line Overband Magnets

Positioned directly in line with the conveyor flow for maximum extraction efficiency. Best for deeper burden depths, high‑speed conveyors and high‑volume plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Overband Magnet?

An overband magnet is an industrial machine used to sort ferrous metals from non-metals. It is often used in the waste management and scrap metal industries for recovering steel, or to remove ferrous materials in a two stage process before using an eddy current machine.

How does an Overband Magnet work?

Mixed material pass underneath the overband magnet. The magnetic field of the overband attracts ferrous metal towards the magnet face and the constantly rotating belt of the overband carries the extracted metal away from the magnet face. When the metal reaches past the end of the magnetic field it drops away from the cleaned material.

Why are overband magnets used in recycling plants?

Overband magnets are installed above conveyor belts to provide continuous ferrous metal separation from mixed waste streams. As material passes underneath, the magnet lifts out steel and iron, ensuring reliable removal of ferrous contaminants. This protects downstream equipment such as shredders, crushers, screens, and conveyors from costly damage caused by tramp metal.

Typically an overband magnetic separator forms one of the first stages of metal recovery. By extracting ferrous metals early, plants improve product purity, increase recovery rates, and create a cleaner feed for subsequent processes such as magnetic drum separation and eddy current separation.

What are the benefits of an overband with permanent magnets?

High-intensity permanent magnet systems deliver reliable, long-lasting performance across a wide range of applications. Their guaranteed non-deteriorating strength eliminates the need for electricity, keeping running costs low and maintenance minimal. With no electrical components, they also offer maximum operational safety—making them a smart, efficient choice for demanding environments.

In-line or crossbelt overband?

cross belt overband magnet can be easier to fit across a conveyor and it may be more convenient to discharge ferrous metal to the side of a conveyor. An in-line overband magnet tends to produce a cleaner ferrous metal and will usually have less belt wear than a crossbelt. Overband magnets need to be positioned above a non-magnetic section of conveyor. This includes the head pulley of the conveyor if it is an in-line installation.

Can an inline overband magnet be positioned across the belt, or vice versa?

No. While both inline and crossbelt overband magnets are designed to deliver optimal separation when mounted correctly, their magnetic fields are focused differently. Mounting an inline magnet as a crossbelt (or vice versa) will result in inconsistent magnetic coverage across the belt, reducing separation efficiency.
